Mack Birthday Celebration

I had the following dream a couple of months after meeting David Mack at Dragon*Con. We’d never met before, but he seemed like an “old friend” almost instantly. I think he’s just the kind of person that’s like that with everyone. Plus, I’d been reading his work for about 13 years, so I felt like I already knew him, I was just introducing myself for the first time. ((^_^))

This dream is also influenced by a trip to North Carolina that I was preparing to take with my Mom to visit my sister and her family. In the dream, I was going to New York instead, but upon waking it seemed somewhat significant in comparison (NY instead of NC).

[11-19-09]

I’m leaving for a trip to New York to attend a “birthday celebration” for David Mack. Several of my friends (including my boyfriend) have been giving me the cold shoulder because I didn’t invite any of them to go along with me, so I drive to the airport by myself.

After a nice relaxing flight, I land in New York hours before the party (my flight must’ve been sooner than planned). I hang around the airport for a while, chatting casually with others who seem to be lingering before they leave the airport as well, for whatever reason. Something causes us to go outside (perhaps we “hung around” the airport for too long?) and I can’t make up my mind as to whether I should stay for a while longer or go ahead to David’s party exceptionally early. It seems that everyone around me is struggling with the same types of decisions, and I eventually, reluctantly, decide to head to the party early.

I take a cab to the location and when we arrive, I’m immediately surprised by the appearance of the house, a large Victorian style white mansion. I get the feeling that the place belongs to his girlfriend’s family, as it doesn’t quite seem his style. A butler greets me at the door and escorts me upstairs to the master bedroom. As I follow behind him, I’m feeling a little uneasy, afraid that I might be invading someone’s personal space. When we reach the bedroom, David and his girlfriend are spreading a sheet across an abnormally large bed. They seem happy to see me and greet me warmly with hugs and handshakes. The girlfriend introduces herself as Mia (although she resembles Mandy). Mia continues straightening sheets, chatting casually about my trip and the events planned for the evening, while David stands off to the side looking a little uncomfortable, and I stand in the doorway, still feeling like I’m awkwardly early. I keep thinking that there are so many things that I’d like to ask David, but I can’t seem to work them into the conversation.
They take me on a tour of the house, with Mia leading the way (it turns out this is her father’s place). I ask if it would be alright for me to just wonder around the premises while they finish preparing for the evening, and Mia says that would be great (she seems relieved to not have to worry about hosting just yet). I go back out through the front door, but there isn’t much to see other than a large circle drive and well trimmed shrubs. I make my way around the house to find a beautiful, elaborate garden in the back, in which I allow myself to get lost for a while, losing track of time.

I eventually meander to the end of the garden, and find that the property is connected to a large body of water (it’s getting dark and hard to tell if it’s a lake or a river). A dock angles out, with a large pontoon-type “party boat” tied to a landing platform. Although I hadn’t seen anyone pass by me in the garden, hundreds of people have arrived and are all packed onto the boat, drinking wine and dancing. David and Mia are making their way through the crowd, greeting all of their guests. I’m a bit cautious to board, afraid that the boat might sink at any moment. I carefully step onboard, but stay close to the dock, just in case. A toast is made in honor of David’s birthday. Across the water, fireworks are set off as we all cheer in delight.
